- OnePlus is working on a new battery health feature that will automatically activate battery charge protection when your device is charging for a long time.
- We have spotted code related to the feature in development in the latest Android 15 beta update for OnePlus devices.
- The feature aims to slow battery aging when users charge their devices for long periods.
Update, July 2, 2024 (11 p.m. ET): The original version of this article incorrectly focused on the battery charge limit as a new feature. However, this is not new, as users can already manually change the charging limit according to their needs. The new, upcoming feature is that this 80% battery charge limit will be activated automatically (without user input) if the device has been charging for a long time. The error has been regretted and the article has been updated to correctly reflect this change.
OnePlus is working on a new battery health feature that could roll out to users with the Android 15 update. The feature will automatically limit charging to 80% when a device is charging for long periods.
A Cracking the APK helps predict features that may come to a service in the future based on work-in-progress code. However, it is possible that such anticipated features may not make it to a public release.
Code spotted in OnePlus’ second release of Android 15 beta (h/t: 1NormalUsername on X, formerly Twitter) points toward more changes coming to Oxygen OS’s Charging Limit feature.
Currently, in Oxygen OS 14, users can choose to limit their device to 80% battery to try to slow down battery aging. In a future version of Oxygen OS, possibly Oxygen OS 15, OnePlus devices will be automatically limited to 80% battery charge if left on for too long. No user data will be needed for this.
Here are the strings that outline how the function might work after release:
Code
<string name="regular_charge_protect_open_alert_content">Your device has been charging for too long. To avoid damage to the battery, \"Charging limit\" has been turned on.</string>
<string name="regular_charge_protection_content">To slow down battery aging, the battery level will always be kept at 80% while charging. This feature will automatically turn on when your device has been charging for too long.</string>
<string name="regular_charge_protection_notification_content">To slow down battery aging, the battery level will always be kept at 80% while charging.</string>
Note that the upcoming feature is not the same as the optimized charging feature currently available on OnePlus devices. While Optimized Charging also limits the battery level to 80%, it anticipates user behavior and charges the rest of the battery 100 minutes before the user is likely to unplug the device.
In contrast, Charge Limit will always keep the battery level at 80% while plugged in, making it more useful for those who keep their phones permanently connected to a charger. Users have a choice for this feature now, but in the future, the phone may also make this decision for itself.
